FAMILY OF ORIGIN THERAPY IN ONTARIO

I approach family of origin work with warmth, curiosity, and respect for the complexity of every person's story.

Together, we will explore the narratives that have influenced your life, the beliefs that may no longer serve you, and the possibilities that emerge when those stories are examined with compassion.

This work is often informed by attachment theory, narrative therapy, and relational approaches that recognize the importance of connection, meaning, and personal agency.

MY APPROACH

Through therapy, we can explore:

  • Childhood experiences and their lasting impact
  • Family roles and expectations
  • Attachment patterns
  • Intergenerational influences
  • Emotional neglect or unmet needs
  • Identity formation
  • Relationship dynamics

The goal of family of origin therapy is to focus on awareness. Not to assign blame. It is about understanding the "why" behind your current struggles so you can unlearn what no longer serves you, develop a deeper understanding of the forces that helped shape you, and create greater freedom in how you move forward.

HOW THERAPY CAN HELP

You may find yourself:

  • Repeating the same relationship patterns
  • Struggling with boundaries
  • Feeling responsible for other people's emotions
  • Experiencing persistent self-doubt or self-criticism
  • Having difficulty trusting others
  • Feeling disconnected from your own needs
  • Carrying unresolved grief, anger, or resentment related to family experiences

Sometimes these patterns are obvious. More often, they operate quietly beneath the surface, influencing how we relate to ourselves and others.

SIGNS FAMILY OF ORIGIN ISSUES MAY BE AFFECTING YOU

Many of the patterns that shape our adult lives begin long before we are aware of them. The environment in which we grew up acts as our first social group, teaching us how to relate to others, respond to conflict, manage emotions, and understand ourselves. Habits we formed as a child to stay safe or feel loved can cause stress points in our adult relationships. Even when we have worked hard to create a different life, old dynamics can continue to echo through our relationships, decisions, and sense of self.

Family of origin therapy offers an opportunity to explore these patterns with curiosity rather than judgment. Together, we can begin to understand how early experiences may still be shaping your present life and how new possibilities can emerge.

UNDERSTANDING THE STORIES WE INHERIT

Family of Origin Therapy in Ontario

Not at all. Family of origin therapy isn't about assigning blame or judging the people that raised you. It's about understanding how your earliest relationships and experiences influence how you see yourself, relate to others, and respond to life's challenges. You may discover that patterns that once helped you adapt in childhood are limiting in adulthood. Many people find that greater understanding leads to greater compassion, for themselves and sometimes for their family as well, while creating space for healthier boundaries and new ways of relating.

02. Is family of origin therapy about blaming the people who raised you for your problems?

Family of origin therapy explores how your early environment and caregivers have shaped your behaviours, emotional coping mechanisms, and relationship patterns. The aim is to uncover unhelpful generational cycles, heal past wounds, and provide you with tools to make conscious choices that align with your own values and help you to create the life and relationships you want moving forward.
